James Stewart/Anthony Mann

The best actor/director combination ever?

In the space of six years Stewart (1908-97) made 8 features with Anthony Mann:

Winchester ’73 (1950)

Where The River Bends/Bend In The River (1952)

Thunder Bay (1953)

The Naked Spur (1953)

The Glenn Miller Story (1954)

The Far Country (1954)

Strategic Air Command (1955)

The Man From Laramie (1955)

Thunder Bay is not good, AND I can’t remember Strategic Air Command at all (I think it reteams him with June Allyson after Glenn Miller). But everything else is great…

I had a stroke on July 26th, 2013. I was a screenwriter. Don’t do that anymore. But have found another way to write.

  1. You’ve used up all your superlatives now! My brother-in-Law, Alan, an inveterate measurer of standards operates what the family calls The Alanometer! He NEVER gives 10 out of 10. He says this never leaves room for the truly greatest! Nine tops, usually 8. If I were you I’d hand out the accolades more spinsterishly !

The James Stewart/ Anthony Mann combo = 8 out of 10!

PS How would you measure your parental luncheon out of ten?
